Locality, nostalgia, innovation. The POLISH JOB exhibition introduces the international audience to the contemporary Polish design through the lens of those three trends. The exhibition will be open from 8 to 13th April 2014 at fuori salone Ventura Lambrate, during this year’s edition of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan.

The exhibition shows the variety of objects and creators: design that is based on local tradition, projects that outline and respect the past, as well as the bold, forward-looking innovative solutions. Analyzed together, these strands build the national identity of today’s Polish design and put it in the international context on the other hand.

The first trend – LOCALITY – is represented by objects growing out of local traditions. Some of them are defined by available technique of production, the other refer to the use of local materials, such as flax, wood or coal. HOCHGLANCE is a collection of coal jewelry, designed by KAJA NOSAL, BOGNA POLAŃSKA and ROMA SKUZA who teamed up in Silesian architecture studio – Pracownia BRO.KAT. The idea of coal jewelry comes from the fascination of the Silesia region and its long coal-mining tradition. HOCHGLANCE collection not only refer to the industrial heritage of Silesia, but also restores the beauty of this raw material. The project was awarded in a couple of local contests in 2012 and 2013.

According to the curators, the second strand – NOSTALGIA – features objects which “neatly allude to Social Realism and process selected elements of the culture of that era in a smart dialogue with the past”. Polish Porcelain Factories „Ćmielów” and „Chodzież” became a flagship example of the rebirth of Polish design born before 1989. Some of the classic forms and patterns from the socialist decades are being re-designed and implemented again (like the Ćmielów iconic figures), the other became an inspiration for the  new collections. Blue Line is a very gentle reference to the rich Polish porcelain heritage. The collection was designed by Marek Cecuła and Dagmara Rogers from Modus Design studio and is available in “Ćmielów” and “Chodzież” product portfolio.

Pan Tu Nie Stał is famous for their witty use of the most iconic slogans and daily objects forms that come directly from the socialist era of Polish People’s Republic (PRL). Although this specific sense of humor may not be obvious for visitors from Western Europe and the design collective name is rather enigmatic – the specific PRL’s aesthetics is a very important reference point in defining the identity of contemporary graphic and product design from Poland. Pan Tu Nie Stał offer includes the variety of clothing, gadgets, souvenirs, accessories and traditional pickled food.

The third context – INNOVATION – showcases solutions which implement state-of-the-art technology and global trends. The first two strands capture the specificity of Polish design and its distinctness by reaching back into the past. The third strand puts Polish design in the international context and relates to new technologies: it reveals the fascinating area of exploration where Polish designers touch on the same issues and speak the same language as the world’s leading designers.  The POLISH JOB exhibition is accompanied by workshops: the visitors can print out miniatures of selected exhibits on a 3D printer.
